Pink eye can be caused by viruses, allergens, bacteria, a foreign body lodged in the eye, or even chemicals. The condition occurs when the clear layer of membrane that covers the whites of the eyes and the inside of the eyelid become inflamed. There are a large number of viruses that can cause conjunctivitis and viral pink eye is highly contagious. If you have pink eye, it’s advisable to try to stay home so as to avoid exposing others at school or at work. The viral form of pink eye can result in large outbreaks. The bacterial form is more common and less contagious. The bacterial form of pink eye is more common in children than in adults. It is also one of the leading causes of children being sent home from school. If you wear contact lenses, be advised that wearing them overnight, or handling them improperly can result in a buildup of bacteria that can cause eye infections, which is why it’s important to talk to our team about how to properly utilize and care for your contacts.

Treatment may include antibiotics in the form of eyedrops or as an oral medication. We’ll also recommend other measures to help alleviate the discomfort of conjunctivitis. Other tips for preventing pink eye, include throwing away and not using old cosmetics, using only clean towels and washcloths, and frequent handwashing.
