As everyone can agree, advances in computer technology improve productivity, give us greater access to entertainment and allow us to be in touch easily with family and friends. While the advantages of technological progress are evident, it’s important to acknowledge that there are also health consequences associated with increased screen time. Looking at a computer, cellphone, tablet or e-reader for too many hours a day can affect your eyesight, causing what is called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). If you experience eye strain, irritation, headaches or difficulty seeing when using a digital device, visit us at the office Bronx Vision Center. We’ll perform a comprehensive examination to identify CVS and determine an effective approach to treatment.
While computers can make life easier, you’d be surprised to know that they can create many challenges for your eyes. Your eyes have to work hard as they focus at the same distance point for a prolonged period and may become fatigued. Flickering screens and glare create added strain, and switching your focus from paper to screen also require your eyes to rapidly adjust. If you have an existing vision impairment, CVS may be more pronounced. If you’re experiencing symptoms of CVS, schedule an appointment with our office. We’ll perform a comprehensive exam to rule out other conditions and create a treatment plan to alleviate the symptoms. In some cases, you may be required to wear specialized lenses for computer use only. If you wear corrective lenses already, your prescription may be modified or you may need a new prescription for computer use. Simple adjustments, such as altering the brightness or contrast on your screen, enlarging font size and changes in lighting to minimize glare can also help mitigate CVS. As skilled and experienced providers of care, we take the time to advise you as to how you can create a healthier computer-viewing environment.
