What color are your eyes? While there are countless numbers of hues, shades, richness and color combinations, your peepers are probably brown, blue, hazel, amber, grey or green.
Eye color refers to the hue of the iris. The color of someone’s eyes depends on how much of the melanin, a natural pigment, is present. Brown eyes have much more melanin than blue eyes. In fact, blue eyes have no melanin in the front layer of their irises (called the stroma). This state makes light disperse when it hits the irises and causes them to appear blue.

About half of the people who live in the U.S. have brown eyes, as do about four out of five people around the world. The color is also more prevalent among residents of areas where the climate is predominantly warm.
Approximately 10 percent of Earth’s population have blue eyes. The eyes of the 5 percent of people with hazel eyes boast a combination of green, blue, gold and brown. It’s uncertain how many of us have peepers that are truly amber. But contrary to hazel eyes, amber eyes aren’t a compilation of colors.
Gray accounts for only three percent, while green is the rarest, at just 2 percent. (Green may be at the bottom of the ladder, but we believe that this makes them look quite exotic!) Green eyes are most common in Northern, Central and Western Europe. About 16 percent of people with green eyes are of Celtic and Germanic ancestry.
