The sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays harm eyes. That’s why many people choose eyeglasses that have polarized lenses. Eye diseases connected to constant UV exposure include: cataracts (cloudy areas on the eye lens) and glaucoma (a serious condition that can lead to blindness); macular degeneration. The macula (a part of the retina) weakens and worsens the overall condition, perhaps leading to the loss of sight; and pterygium (a growth on the eyeball).
Everyone at Bronx Vision Center is an expert at helping our customers with their eye health as well as choosing the eyeglasses and contact lenses that are right for them. We will scrupulously evaluate the health of your eyes and patiently answer all of your questions. Your care and comfort are our top priorities.
To have polarization, your lenses must be somewhat tinted. Though they can’t be clear, they can be made in grey, brown, green or other colors. Glasses with UV protection aren’t automatically polarized. While polarized glasses do offer defense from UV rays, they also reduce glare. Some glasses protect from UV rays but don’t reduce glare.
Polarized lenses differ from typical glasses in that they have a chemical coat that screens light. The coat prevents all of the light from penetrating it. You can think of the coat as window curtains that dim the amount of light that can enter a room. The lenses allow vertical light through but not horizontal light, which substantially cuts down on sun glare from rays that reflect on horizontal surfaces such as snow, water and the road. Your eyes perceive the deflected light as a rainbow or waves.
Their major benefit is that they offer enhanced clarity of vision while outside, even when it’s cloudy. People who frequently golf, sail, fish, drive and engage in other outdoor activities find them to be extremely helpful. Polarized lenses that are large offer even more protection from UV rays by blocking additional sunlight that could enter from the top and sides.
