Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness for those aged 55 and older in the United States, affecting more than 10 million Americans. AMD is caused by hardening of the arteries that nourish the retina, the light-sensing layer of the eye. This deprives the sensitive retinal tissue of oxygen and nutrients needed to function and thrive, leading to vision loss.

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration varies widely in severity and can present different symptoms:

  • Complete loss of central vision in severe cases
  • Difficulty reading or driving
  • Slight visual distortion in milder cases
  • Blurry area in the center of vision
  • Difficulty recognizing faces

In the worst cases, macular degeneration causes a complete loss of central vision, making reading or driving impossible. For others, it may only cause slight distortion.

Causes of Macular Degeneration

AMD is primarily caused by hardening of the arteries that nourish the retina. Several factors may aggravate macular degeneration, including smoking, cardiovascular disease, exposure to sunlight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or poor diet. Heredity may also influence the development of macular degeneration.

Diagnosing Macular Degeneration

Our experienced ophthalmologists can diagnose macular degeneration through comprehensive eye examinations, including retinal imaging and visual field tests to assess the extent of vision loss and determine the best treatment approach.

Damage to the macula prevents light from reaching the optic nerve, creating a blurry area right in the center of the field of vision.
