Glaucoma Evaluation & Management

The optic nerve is the primary site of glaucomatous damage. We evaluate the optic nerve head carefully for signs of structural change, including cup-to-disc ratio, rim tissue integrity, and nerve fiber layer appearance.

Visual field testing detects functional loss associated with glaucoma. We perform and interpret visual field examinations to assess the extent of any field defect and monitor for progression over time.

When appropriate, structural imaging of the optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layer provides additional information to support diagnosis and monitoring. We use imaging findings in the context of the full clinical picture.

Glaucoma risk is influenced by multiple factors, including eye pressure, optic nerve appearance, family history, corneal thickness, and other clinical findings. We assess each patient's individual risk profile and discuss findings clearly.

There is no cure for glaucoma yet, but it can be managed to prevent further vision loss — which is why early detection matters. The appropriate treatment depends on the type of glaucoma, among other factors.

Treatment for glaucoma is aimed at lowering intraocular pressure to a level that reduces the risk of further optic nerve damage. Medical therapy — typically eye drops — is the most common first-line approach. We discuss treatment options, expected benefits, and potential side effects.

Glaucoma is a chronic condition requiring ongoing monitoring. We provide structured, long-term follow-up to assess treatment response, monitor for progression, and adjust the management plan as needed.

When glaucoma is advanced, progressing despite medical therapy, or requires surgical intervention, we coordinate referral to a glaucoma specialist. We remain involved in the patient's ongoing care as appropriate.

Laser procedures and glaucoma surgery — which improve fluid drainage from the eye or reduce fluid production — are performed by the glaucoma specialist.
