Bronx Vision Center provides comprehensive eye care for children beginning at approximately 6 months of age. Early detection of visual problems is essential to healthy visual development. Our pediatric examinations are thorough, age-appropriate, and designed to put young patients at ease.
A school or pediatrician vision screening is helpful, but it mainly checks how well a child reads an eye chart. A child can pass a screening and still have a focusing, eye-teaming, or eye health problem. A comprehensive eye exam looks at the whole picture.
Many children do not realize their vision is blurry — they assume everyone sees the way they do. Young children do not need to know their letters; we use age-appropriate tests.
What We Evaluate
From visual development to school-age needs.
Visual Development
Vision develops rapidly in the first years of life. Early examination helps identify conditions that, if left untreated, can interfere with normal visual development and lead to permanent vision problems.
Refractive Error
Refractive errors — including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism — are among the most common visual conditions in children. Uncorrected refractive error can affect learning, reading, and overall development.
Myopia
Myopia is increasingly common in children and tends to progress during the school-age years. We monitor myopia progression and discuss management options with families.
Hyperopia
Significant farsightedness in children can contribute to eye strain, difficulty with near tasks, and — in some cases — amblyopia or eye misalignment. Early detection and appropriate correction are important.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism causes blurred or distorted vision at all distances. It is common in children and is typically corrected with glasses or contact lenses.
Amblyopia
Amblyopia — commonly called lazy eye — is reduced vision in one eye that is not fully correctable with glasses alone. It develops when the visual system does not receive adequate stimulation during the critical period of visual development. Early detection and treatment are essential.
Eye Alignment & Binocular Vision
Strabismus (eye misalignment) and binocular vision problems can affect depth perception, reading, and visual comfort. We evaluate eye alignment and binocular function as part of every pediatric examination.
Ocular Health
A complete pediatric eye examination includes evaluation of the health of all ocular structures — including the cornea, lens, retina, and optic nerve.
School-Age Visual Needs
Vision plays a critical role in learning. Children who struggle in school may have undetected visual problems. We evaluate visual skills relevant to reading and academic performance as part of the school-age examination.
Signs to Watch For
Children rarely complain about their vision.
Vision problems can show up as trouble in school, short attention for reading, or behavior that looks unrelated to the eyes. If you notice any of these signs, schedule an eye exam.

- ·An eye that turns in, out, up, or down
- ·Losing their place while reading
