LASIK & Vision-Correction Consultation

LASIK uses a laser to reshape the cornea — the clear front surface of the eye — so that light focuses more clearly. It is used to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Not every patient is a candidate for LASIK. A thorough evaluation helps determine whether the procedure is appropriate for you based on your prescription, corneal health, ocular surface status, and visual goals.

The health and thickness of the cornea are critical factors in LASIK candidacy. Conditions such as keratoconus or other corneal irregularities may affect eligibility for laser vision correction.

A stable refractive prescription — typically for at least one to two years — is generally required before proceeding with LASIK. We review your prescription history as part of the evaluation.

If you wear contact lenses, you may be asked to stop wearing them for a period of time before your measurements, because lenses can temporarily change the shape of the cornea. We will tell you what applies to you when you schedule.

The health of the ocular surface is an important consideration before LASIK. Dry eye disease and other ocular surface conditions should be evaluated and optimized before surgery to support the best possible outcome.

Understanding your visual goals — including your expectations for distance, intermediate, and near vision after surgery — is an important part of the consultation process. We discuss realistic outcomes based on your individual findings.

We perform or coordinate the necessary preoperative measurements and evaluations to support surgical planning. When LASIK or another vision-correction procedure is appropriate, we coordinate with trusted refractive surgical partners.

Following LASIK, we provide postoperative care and monitoring as part of a coordinated co-management arrangement. We monitor for healing, address any postoperative concerns, and manage the ocular surface as needed.
